SSPX Pilgrims Turned Away from Marian Shrine in Italy

Incident at Cuceglio raises questions about the Church’s commitment to inclusion

On March 28, participants in an SSPX-organized Italian pilgrimage found their journey ended before the cold doors of the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows shut in their faces. The pilgrimage had communicated in advance that there would only be a few prayers given to the Blessed Mother at the conclusion of their pilgrimage without even a private mass. However on arriving, the pilgrims including several priests, some of the Consoling Sisters of the Sacred Heart and many faithful found the doors to be locked shut.

The Italian newspaper La Voce reported that:

“According to reports, the decision was taken at the behest of Don Luca Meinardi, on the recommendation of the bishop of Ivrea, Mons. Daniele Salera. A choice that, inevitably, collides with an ecclesial lexicon that in recent years insists on words such as welcome, inclusion, dialogue, mercy.”

This action would seem to go against the will of Pope Leo XIV, who recently communicated to the French Bishops that what must be done is to “suggest concrete solutions...that will allow for the generous inclusion of those sincerely attached to the Vetus Ordo.”
